She met him at the ice cream parlor
She was a teller in the small time bank
Where he'd withdrawn a single dollar
For gasoline in his motorcycle tank
At 17 her mother and father
Forbade a man who could not provide
He'd pick her up from the Savings and Loan
They'd cruise the lanes that summer of '35

Sometimes old memories they come back to stay
Like the scent of an old five and dime
As vivid as yesterday

Into the bank he strolled that morning
The August sun shone hot and bright
Her heart leapt when she saw him
But he stared with hollow vacant eyes
As he drew an unloaded pistol
They shot him down beside his motorbike
Betrayed by her summer lover
She cursed his name as she watched him die

She can feel the wind in her hair
